The flower dress is everywhere so much so that it seems like it’s always been around. But just how long has it been around?
It is commonly believed that the flower dress originated in China and dates back to the Tang Dynasty (618-907)! Coming from China, the first floral garments were printed on silk. A rare and gorgeous fabric, only the wealthiest Europeans could afford them!
It then gained popularity in the 16th century with Venetian lace.
With Ottoman merchants in the 16th and 17th centuries, Europe experienced the fashion for Persian velvets! These luxurious fabrics were decorated with floral motifs such as tulip, vine or pomegranate.
On thick fabrics, it was not until the 18th century with the luxurious brocade that French and Italian couturiers incorporated flowers into their creations. The most popular motifs were European flowers such as roses, daisies and carnations. As with fabrics from the East, this silk fabric adorned with flowers in gold and silver thread was worn only by the wealthy.
Nowadays, the flower dress is appreciated all over the world! Symbolizing fertility and the season of nature’s awakening, refined, beautiful and fragrant, the flower is one of the most popular designs for women around the world.
