The floral dress is everywhere so much so that it seems like it’s always been around. But just how long has it been around?
The existence of the floral garment is over 1400 years old! Originating in China, the first floral garments were printed on silk. A rare and splendid fabric, only the wealthiest Europeans could afford them!
With the famous Italian lace, it wasn’t until the 16th century that floral designs began to be widely incorporated into European craftsmanship.
With the Ottoman merchants of the 16th and 17th centuries, Europe experienced the fashion for Persian velvets! These luxurious fabrics were embellished with floral motifs such as tulip, vine or pomegranate.
On thick fabrics, it was not until the 18th century with the famous brocade that European artisans added floral patterns to their creations. The fashionable motifs were native flowers such as the rose, the daisy and the carnation. As with fabrics from the East, this silk fabric magnified with gold and silver flowers was only available to the wealthy.
Since the 20th century, flowered clothing is everywhere! Evocative of fertility and spring, refined, gorgeous and fragrant, the flower is one of the most prized designs for women around the world.
