The floral dress is everywhere so much so that it seems like it’s always been around. But just how long has it been around?
The existence of the floral garment is over 1400 years old! Imported from China via the Silk Road, these garments were mostly adorned with floral designs such as peonies. At the time, these beautiful fabrics from far away countries were sold at a premium in Europe!
With the famous Venetian lace, it was not until the 16th century that floral patterns began to be widely incorporated into European craftsmanship.
Between the 16th and 18th centuries, patterns developed on heavier fabrics. Indeed other countries such as Persia and India participated in the craze for the floral pattern with the trade of beautiful dresses with exotic charm.
On thick fabrics, it was only in the 18th century with the famous brocade that French and Italian couturiers integrated floral patterns into the aesthetic vocabulary of clothing. The fashionable motifs were European flowers such as the rose, the daisy and the carnation. As with fabrics from the East, this silk fabric magnified with gold and silver thread patterns was worn only by the wealthy.
Today, the flowered garment is appreciated worldwide! Evocative of fertility and the return of light, refined, beautiful enchanting and fragrant, the flower is one of the most worn designs by women around the world.
